Sunken Ledge

Published by emily on Tue, 12/29/2015 - 13:45

The time has finally come. We have been itching to make a traditional porter for a long time. Sunken Ledge is a tribute to our good friend Toby Chambers, who was instrumental in the construction of Boxing Rock…and who also brews an amazing porter of his own at home in Grande Prairie, Alberta. Those of you who have visited the brewery will know our tanks all have names, and the first batch of Sunken Ledge fermented in the tank we named Toby.

On Toby’s recommendation we used Golden Promise pale ale malt as the base for this medium-bodied, mildly bittered porter. It pours a deep mahogany colour with a persistent tan head and there is a subtle molasses aroma as you bring the glass to your lips. The flavours that follow are of dark chocolate and coffee, in fact the coffee taste lingers pleasantly…gently encouraging the next sip.

Smooth, lightly carbonated and very drinkable, Sunken Ledge is a porter that pays tribute to the tradition of a great beer style and the tradition of great friends who are there when you need them most.

Oh, and in case you are wondering, Sunken Ledge is a shoal in Shelburne Harbour, and as far as we can tell has never been responsible for sinking a ship.

Sunken Ledge: 5% ABV, 21 IBU available at select NSLC Stores and Private Wine Stores next week, Seaport and Alderney Farmers Markets this Saturday and direct from the brewery in beautiful Shelburne now!

Triskaidekaphobia is not a beer for the superstitious.

Brewed on Friday, November 13th, 2015 in collaboration with Big Spruce Brewing, and the Ladies' Beer League, this Imperial American Brown Ale perfectly blends roasty and chocolate flavours, alcohol warmth, and depth of character.

We conditioned it on sweet cherries and split vanilla beans, which resulted in a beautiful complexity. It will leave you yearning for more.

Triskaidekaphobia is a one off batch of #NSCraft Conspiracy Series ale, and once it's gone, it may never return….

Triskaidekaphobia is an extremely limited release, and is now available at Bishop's Cellar, Rockhead Beer and Wine Market, Harvest Wines, and Cristall Wine Merchants.
It will also be available for a limited time at our booths at the Halifax Seaport Market, and Alderney Farmer's Market.
Of course, it will also be available at our retail store at our brewery in beautiful Shelburne.

U-889 - 2015

Published by henry on Sat, 11/14/2015 - 05:58

It's back. And better than ever.

Our tribute to Kapitänleutnant Friedrich Brauecker, the WW-II German Submarine captain that surrendered to a Canadian Navy frigate off the coast of Cape Breton on May 10, 1945, at the end of World War II. U-889 was escorted to Shelburne Harbour, and tied up at the Government Wharf.
It's said that upon search of the vessel by Canadian military authorities that Canadian money had been found as well as ticket stubs from a local theatre. Clearly these men had been ashore before. Covertly. Sneaky, those German submariners.

Strong. Dark. Bracing. Just as we think the submariners aboard U-889 would have liked it.
This Russian Imperial Stout is brewed with passion. We used over six hundred kilos of malt to brew it. We then boiled it for two hours to bring out the rich flavours demanded of the style and hopped it with just enough smooth bitterness to balance it’s richness. We then added 22 gallons of strong cold-brewed coffee from our friends at Just-Us!, and then we infused it with 20 pounds of plump, premium Madagascar Bourbon vanilla beans for over two weeks.

Tasting notes: rich malt, chocolate, caramel, roasted grain, coffee, vanilla. Initial bitterness followed by a long smooth finish. It’s like a dessert in a glass.

Ideal serving temperature: 10°C - 12°C Lightly carbonated. 8.89% ABV 65 IBU

U-889 Coffee and Vanilla Russian Imperial Stout –Now you can have your cake and drink it too.
We think that the 2015 version of U-889 is the best version yet.
Get it 650 ml bottles at our retail store in Beautiful Shelburne, as well as Bishop's Cellar, Rockhead Beer & Wine Market, Harvest Wines, Cristall Wine Merchants, as well as selected bars and restaurants.
Supplies are extremely limited so get it while it lasts.

Home Draught Gift Set

Published by henry on Tue, 11/10/2015 - 08:20

Introducing our latest cool item for the craft beer lover who has everything.

Our tabletop draught beer dispensing system is a CO2 driven pressurized device that replaces the cap of a standard 64 oz growler.
It will deliver fresh draught beer via a small tap, and because it uses CO2 to dispense the beer, your beer will taste better, won't go flat, and will stay fresher longer.

It uses a standard food grade 16 gram CO2 canister available at many retail stores, and has a built in safety pressure relief valve so you won't accidentally over pressurize your growler.

Available now at our brewery retail store in the form of a gift set:

- One 64 oz growler of your favourite beer (choose between Hunky Dory Pale Ale, Temptation Red Ale, or Crafty Jack English Ale)
- Tabletop draught dispenser and one CO2 cartridge
- Two branded 16 oz Boxing Rock shaker glasses
- A nicely packaged gift box for the whole affair.

Only $99 plus HST, while supplies last.

Available at the brewery retail store, and (by special order) on Saturdays only at our stalls at the Halifax Seaport Market, and the Alderney Farmer's Market.

The Darkness is Back

Published by henry on Wed, 09/30/2015 - 08:05

Just in time for the fall season…

The Darkness, Cascadian Dark Ale

An India Pale Ale, in all things but colour, it's hoppy, bright, and packed full of big flavours.

Dark, dark, dark. Pours with almost stout-like black inkiness, capped with a nice tan head.
First sensation is the hop forward presentation from copious amounts of late hops, and dry hops. It's followed by a gorgeous roasty body with a hint of wheat chewiness, fruity middle notes and then backed up by bracing bitterness in the finish.

This is the time of year when you concentrate on staying warm and comfortable, and crave those rich flavours of the season. The Darkness Cascadian Dark Ale fits the bill perfectly.

Get it on tap at select bars in Halifax.

It will be available in 650 mL bottles at select NSLC stores, Saturdays at the Alderney Farmer's Market, and Saturdays at the Halifax Seaport Farmer's Market.
Of course, you can also get it at the brewery retail store at 78 Ohio Road in beautiful Shelburne.

Many Hands Harvest Ale

Published by henry on Thu, 09/10/2015 - 12:23

Harvest time.

That means that hops are ready to pick. And this year we were told of a bumper crop at Lazy Acres in Wolfville.
So we got in the truck and drove out to pick some.

We got together with our good friends Peter and Josh at North Brewing Company in Halifax and collaborated to make a kick ass harvest beer.
Many Hands Pale Ale is back. At 5.6% ABV, loads of Vienna Malt and of course over 75 pounds of fresh picked Chinook, Willamette and Cascade hops, all organically grown right here in Nova Scotia, what could be better?

With a beautifully floral nose, mild smooth bitterness accompanying a rich biscuity malt base, Many Hands Pale Ale is our tribute to the harvest.

Available now for a limited time at bars and restaurants in Halifax, and of course at our Brewery Retail Store in Shelburne, as well as our booths at the Halifax Seaport Farmers' Market, and Alderney Farmers' Market (Saturdays).

Introducing KERFUFFLE!

An American style Pale Ale, hoppy and bright, with just the right amount of bitterness, and great hop aroma.
Made with 100% Canadian grown hops sourced direct from our grower, this beer strikes a perfect balance between malt and hops, starting with Magnum hops for bittering, and Willamette and Centennial for finishing. Think you know those varietals? Check out the Canadian terroir of these hops and you'll be pleasantly surprised.

Thanks to Clear Valley Hops for great hop products, you're going to love this beer!

Available for a very limited time only at bars and restaurants in Halifax and Lunenburg, including Brooklyn Warehouse, Stillwell, The Stubborn Goat, The Lion & Bright Cafe, and The Grand Banker.

It will also be available in growlers at the Brewery Retail Store, The Halifax Seaport Market (Saturdays from 7 am till 3 pm) and Alderney Farmer's Market (Saturdays 8 am till 3 pm).

Bottle Blonde!

Published by henry on Wed, 07/08/2015 - 11:20

Summer is finally here. It was one of the worst winters anyone can remember, and spring never really arrived - It was cold. Then it was hot. And here we are.
Well, if you can't take the heat, have a beer. A nice cold refreshing one.

We've got it. Introducing Bottle Blonde Rye Ale.

It's malty. It's got that spicy hint of something in the background you just can't put your finger on. The hops are there and signal their presence but in a way that lets the malt come through.
And with over 35% rye malt, it's different enough to grab your attention.

It's summer beer with just a bit of attitude, yet mild, easy going and eminently drinkable.

Like some of our favourite bottle blondes: Gwen Stefani, Lady Gaga, or even, dare I say it, Dee Snyder or Guy Fieri (You might not admit it, but admit it, you secretly like these guys.) it's got a bit of attitude and doesn't take itself too seriously. ;-D

It might just be the perfect summer beer.

Available right now at Stillwell Beer Garden and Stillwell Bar, as well as The Townhouse pub in Antigonish. Available also at select NSLC stores.

Of course you can always get it at the brewery retail store in Shelburne, or at our stall at the Halifax Seaport Farmers' Market on Saturdays from 7:00 am until 3:00 pm.

Never satisfied…

We love session beers. There's something awesome about a great low alcohol beer. Trouble is that there are so few of them.

Sure it's comparatively easy to make a spectacular strong ale, and there are great examples of them all over, including ones we make. But there seem to be a dearth of really great session ales. I mean who wants to drink "light" beer? Well, we do from time to time, but what few there are out there are mostly mediocre.

Enter Sessionista. You may remember Sessionista from last year, a 3.5% bold session ale in the English Bitter tradition.

Not any more.

We've improved it, made it better, bolder, hoppier. Sessionista 2015 is what we like to call a "Fractional IPA". It's still bold, and malty, but it's also beautifully aromatic and hoppy. The first thing that hits you is that great nose of floral hops. Think lemon blossom, orange, and tropical fruit. Then flavours of biscuit, roasty caramel and toasted bread on the palate backed up by a tropical fruity hop middle with just the right amount of bitterness and finishing with a piney citrusy blast. And at 4% ABV you'll ask for another.

Now that's what we're talking about…

Sessionista is available for a limited time in 650 ml bottles at select NSLC stores, on tap at select bars in Halifax as well as at the Brewery Retail store in beautiful Shelburne.

Cinnamon Spin!

Published by henry on Thu, 04/16/2015 - 17:55

The Ladies' Beer League must have been pleased with us. Last year, in celebration of International Women's Day, we brewed The Alewife's Revenge, a cranberry wheat ale, with the ladies of the Ladies' Beer League.
This year, the theme was "Robust Porter". We accept the challenge and raise you a pile of cinnamon…and molasses.

Introducing Cinnamon Spin!

Big, dark, malty and roasty, with notes of coffee, chocolate, with the teensiest bit of fruitiness in the background, this is everything a Robust Porter should be, including its 6.5% ABV strength.
We added two big forward features to this palette. Cinnamon and molasses. The combination is quite complimentary of the porter, and we think it's a winner.

Because this beer was brewed in observance of International Women's Day, we are donating a portion of the profits from this beer to the Shelburne County Women's Fishnet bursary program and the Halifax Sexual Health Centre.

We're launching this unique beer at Stillwell Beer Bar Saturday April 18, at 6:30 pm.
Only a very few kegs will be available, as well as a cask conditioned version of Cinnamon Spin.

Afterwards, you can find it at Bishop's Cellar, Harvest Wines, Rockhead Wine & Beer Market, and Cristall Wine Merchants.
We will also have it available at our growler exchanges at The Halifax Seaport Market and The Alderney Landing Market on Saturdays.

Of course, you can always get it at the Brewery retail store in beautiful Shelburne.

Get it while it lasts.

Wild Axe!

Published by henry on Thu, 02/05/2015 - 10:34

We're thinking of summer. When most people think of summer, they conjure images in their heads of boating, fishing, beach vacations, camping, and swimming.

We think of Lumberjacks. Woods-men and women.

We dream about underhand block chop, crosscut, single buck, double buck, hot saw, logrolling, axe throw, 90 foot speed climb.

You too can sign up to be a lumberjack for a day. Ever heard of Darren Hudson? You should. He's a six time world log-rolling champion.

And this summer, Boxing Rock is teaming up with Darren to present the Wild Axe Challenge. Check it out. You'll be glad you did.

And what better refreshment and rejuvenation after a day of Lumberjack activity than a great Pilsener?

Wild Axe Bohemian Pilsener (5.7% ABV): Made with our local lumberjacks in mind, this is a traditional bohemian pilsener, brewed exclusively with Saaz hops and fermented long and aged cold for a perfect pilsener taste.
Make no mistake, this is no milquetoast beer. This is a big beer, bold and refreshing, the perfect accompaniment to axe throwing, log rolling or just generally being outside in the woods.
