U-889 2016 is released

Published by henry on Wed, 12/14/2016 - 08:20

It's that time of year again, and our tribute to the U-Boat U-889 is back again!

U-889 was an advanced German combat U-boat that surrendered in the Atlantic waters off the coast of Nova Scotia when they learned that World War II was over.

Their orders were to proceed immediately to the German submarine port in Norway, but the Captain Friedrich Breuecker had other plans. He knew he'd rather go to Canada than Norway.

They were escorted by the Royal Canadian Navy to the port of Shelburne where they were berthed at the Government Wharf in Shelburne.
They surrendered without incident, without having fired a single torpedo, and were genuinely glad to be on Canadian soil even though it meant that they were headed to Prisoner of War camps before being send back home.

This beer is our tribute to them. Yes it may be a Russian Imperial Stout, but we don't think that war weary German submariners would have been satisfied with a wimpy Pilsener or Kolsch.

Kilnus Interruptus

Published by henry on Thu, 11/10/2016 - 12:25

When our friends at Horton Ridge Malt called us and told us they had a batch of Certified Organic malt that hadn't turned out according to plan due to a power interruption we jumped at the chance to brew a unique and special beer with it. They called it "Kilnus Interruptus" which we immediately co-opted as the perfect beer name for this malt.

We called on our favourite hop supplier Clear Valley Hops and they provided us with a few bags of special hops. Crystal hops grown in Southern Ontario with a fantastic delicate aroma of orange, tangerine, and peach, and a wild Ontario cultivar they dubbed "Wild Turkey". This wild hop, seemingly indestructible, and prolific, has a smooth bittering profile with a beautiful herbal and floral, spring blossom nose that complements the fruity aromas of the Crystal hops perfectly.

This hoppy goodness is laid atop a base of delicious biscuity bready pale malt reminiscent of the best pilsener malts but with its own homegrown character.

The result is a beer of exceptionally rare character in the American Pale Ale style. Only one batch is available.

We think that the malt kiln should break down more often…

Kilnus Interruptus is available on tap at select bars and restaurants in Halifax for a very limited time only.
It will be available in bottles at Rockhead Beer and Wine Market, Bishop's Cellar, Harvest Wines and Cristall Wine Merchants.
It will also be available in growlers at our stalls at the Halifax Seaport Market and Alderney Farmers Market on Saturdays.

Of course you can also pick some up at our brewery retail store in Shelburne.

Wild Axe is back

Published by henry on Tue, 11/08/2016 - 08:40

We love Wild Axe.
It's our tribute to hard working woodsmen and women who wield axes and saws, who work the back woods of this province so that we can build our homes and heat them.

And what better venue to get it on tap than The Timber Lounge Halifaxe. Grab a pint, throw an axe and rock out.

Available for a limited time only in bottles at Rockhead Wine & Beer Market, Bishop's Cellar, Harvest Wines and Cristall Wine Merchants.

Of course you can get it at our retail store at the brewery in Shelburne, and in growlers at the HAlifax Seaport Farmers Market and Alderney Farmers Market every Saturday while supplies last.

Battery Rock India Brown Ale

Published by henry on Wed, 11/02/2016 - 11:52

We brewed this unique beer in collaboration with Marc Wilson, bar manager at Battery Park Beer Bar and home brewing enthusiast and with Peter Burbridge, of North Brewing Company.
A style that's very rarely seen in Atlantic Canada, we brewed this India Brown Ale with our favourite dark malts and added a load of super aromatic hops to fully complement the roasty malts.

Lok for notes of chocolate and toast supporting a beautifully aromatic floral and citrus hop nose. This unusual flavour combination follows through with a malty biscuity finish complemented by tropical fruits, peaches, passion fruit and exotic citrus.

We're sure you'll love it!

Available for a very limited time only at our brewery retail store, as well as our stalls at the Halifax Seaport Farmers' Market and the Alderny Farmers' Market on Saturdays.

Shame on You!

Published by henry on Tue, 08/02/2016 - 13:02

Have you noticed that real Nova Scotia Craft Beer is often paired side by side with those other "Premium" brands? We think that's a deliberate attempt to blur the lines between authentic #NSCraftbeer and other beverages that are attempting to impersonate and co-opt #NSCraftbeer.

Well we teamed up with our good friends at Big Spruce Brewing and made a doozy. Shame-On-You IPA is a super aromatic brew that looks like "the other guys" but is true NS Craft Beer. It's packed with copious amounts of late addition hoppy greatness, and dry hopped with more of the same.

It's a decidedly un-premium beer.

It is being released Thursday Aug 4th at both breweries, and will debut in Halifax at our table at Halifax Seaport Beerfest on Friday Aug 5th, and then at select NS craft beer serving establishments this weekend.

We hope that this beer also raises awareness for those that sell beer in Nova Scotia. Nova Scotia Craft Beer should be recognized so that beer buyers that want to keep their beer money here in the province, aren't fooled into thinking they have.

Hop Springs Eternal

Published by henry on Tue, 06/21/2016 - 15:10

Last winter we held our first ever home-brew competition, the Black Box Challenge.

The winning beer would be brewed right here in Shelburne in collaboration with the winning home brewer.
Well, we did just that, and it sold out in days. We brewed the third place beer as well, and it sold out rapidly.
So we decided to make it a trifecta, and brew the first runner up.

Made in collaboration with home brewers Mark Reid and Sean Ebert.

It's a White IPA made with over 30% wheat in the malt bill, and hopped generously with Columbus, Cascade, Willamette and New Zealand Pacifica hops. This creates a blend of flavours right up the IPA alley, while the wheat makes a great mouth filling base for it.
To top it off we used quite an obscure yeast strain to ferment it, giving the beer some fruity notes that perfectly compliment the fruity citrus and pine notes in the beer.

Perfectly refreshing, smooth and easily drinkable. You'll ask for another.

Available on tap at Battery Park in Dartmouth, as well as Stillwell and The Townhouse Pub in Antigonish.
It will be available in bottles at Bishop's Cellar, Rockhead Wine & Beer Market, Harvest Wines and Cristall Wine Merchants. Also, for a limited time it will be available at Liquid Assets, on the air-side of the Halifax Standfield International Airport!

Of course you can get it in growlers on Saturdays at the Halifax Seaport Market, and Alderney Farmers' Market as well as at our own Boxing Rock retail store in beautiful Shelburne.

Bottle Blonde Back On!

Published by henry on Tue, 06/21/2016 - 14:54

It's finally summer and that means our summer seasonal is back on!

Re-introducing Bottle Blonde!

It's malty. It's got that spicy hint of something in the background you just can't put your finger on. The hops are there and signal their presence but in a way that lets the malt come through.
And with over 35% rye malt, it's different enough to grab your attention.

It's summer beer with just a bit of attitude, yet mild, easy going and eminently sessionable.

Like some of our favourite bottle blondes: Gwen Stefani, Lady Gaga, or even, dare I say it, Dee Snyder or Guy Fieri (You might not admit it, but admit it, you secretly like these guys.) it's got a bit of attitude and doesn't take itself too seriously. ;-D

It might just be the perfect summer beer.

Available at Stillwell Beer Garden, as well as Battery Park in Dartmouth. Available also at select NSLC stores very soon.
Of course you can always get it at the brewery retail store in Shelburne, or at our stall at the Halifax Seaport Farmers' Market and the Alderney Farmers' Market on Saturdays from 7:00 am until 3:00 pm.

Oban Heather Returns!

Published by henry on Tue, 06/21/2016 - 14:39

This one-off brew was so good that it sold out in just a couple of weeks!
So we decided to brew it again.

Made with loads of Golden Promise Malt, it has a perfect malty biscuity base to showcase the 35 kg of Scottish Heather flowers we put into the brew.
To balance all those heady floral notes of the Heather, we added lots and lots of wildflower honey from our producer up in the Annapolis Valley, and just a hint of peat smoked malt.
The we added just a touch of English Fuggles hops to balance the whole affair.

Originally made as an accompaniment to a Robbie Burns dinner, it is so totally sessionable you'll want to drink it any time of the year, and what better time than now?

This beer is so unmistakably Scottish that you'll be donning your kilt before the end of your pint!

Available for a limited time only at select bars in Halifax and Antigonish, as well as in 650 ml bottles at Bishop's Cellar, Rockhead Wine & Beer Market, Harvest Wines, and Cristall Wine Merchants. And also for a limited time you can find it at Liquid Assets, that great Nova Scotia retailer on the air-side of the Halifax Stanfield International Airport.
It will be available in 1L growlers at our stalls at the Halifax Seaport Market and the Alderney Farmers' Market on Saturdays from 7:00 am until 3:00 pm.

Of course you can also get it at the Brewery retail store in Shelburne.

Sessionista is Back!

Published by henry on Fri, 04/08/2016 - 14:03

Our favourite session beer is back!

Sessionista is a bold session ale in the IPA style. At only 4% ABV it's more of a "factional IPA", but it's completely whole in terms of the flavour punch that it delivers.
You would never guess that this qualifies as a "light" beer. Mainly because it's delicious!

Look for it at your local NSLC outlet and at selected bars and restaurants.

La Rive du Sud - Biere de Garde 2.0

Published by henry on Wed, 03/16/2016 - 10:12

La Rive du Sud is a Bière de Garde that is unlike any other beer brewed in Atlantic Canada.

We've brewed La Rive du Sud a little differently this year, and we think that it's the best Bière de Garde we've made yet.

Bière de Garde is a style that originated in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region of Flanders.
In the days before refrigeration it was not practical to brew beer in the summer months, because the hot weather was not favourable for fermentation. So the brewers of the region made strong beer and stored it in underground cellars for consumption during the summer.

Originally a farmhouse style, made at home, it was adopted by a few northern breweries and was nearly lost as a style because the few breweries that made it were destroyed during the two world wars, their tanks taken and melted down for the manufacture of weapons.

Even today if you take a trip to the Nord-Pas-de-Calais area, you'll likely be bombarded by Eurotrash lagers and Belgian yellow fizz rather than a proper Bière de Garde, but if you persist, you'll find a few examples.

Fortunately if you live in Nova Scotia, you can enjoy one right now.

We're proud to produce this once noble beer, and are doubly proud to have made Nova Scotia's very first Bière de Garde.

Made with simple base malts and dark caramelized sugar this simple combination of ingredients yields an ale of noteworthy complexity. With notes of biscuit, caramel, toffee, as well as tangerine, biscuit, and a chewy malt base that is at once mouth filling and refreshing.
We lagered (well, guarded, actually) this ale for weeks until it was perfect.
It's remarkably smooth on the palate and although it has a medium-dry finish, it has a lingering pleasant aftertaste that can only be described as "French".
7.5% ABV.

Get it while it lasts in 650 ml bottles, 1L growlers and on tap at select locations.

Wile Axe Again!

Published by henry on Wed, 03/16/2016 - 09:57

Get out in the woods.

Once again we've teamed up with our resident lumberjack six-time log rolling world champion and expert woodsman Darren Hudson to make our favourite Pilsener, Wild Axe Bohemian Pilsener.

Made in the traditional style with 100% Czech Saaz hops and Bohemian Pilsener malt this beer is a perfect expression of the style.
More importantly, it's crisp, clean, refreshing, and super drinkable. Some might call it crushable. We call it delish.

We're launching Wild Axe at the Timber Lounge, Halifax's premier indoor Axe Throwing facility.

It will also be available on tap at Battery Park in Dartmouth, and in bottles at Bishop's Cellar, Rockhead, Harvest, and http://www.cristallwinemerchants.com/store/.

Of course you'll find it at our booths at the Alderney Farmers' Market and the Halifax Seaport Market, as well as in our Brewery Retail Store in Shelburne.

The Next Chapter

Published by henry on Fri, 02/19/2016 - 07:34

Last year one of our good friends and brewer extraordinaire, Andrew Estabrooks stopped by and we made a fantastic IPA called The Next Chapter.
Not doing anything conventionally here, we made it a Rye IPA, with over 30% rye malt. This gave The Next Chapter that unmistakable rye spiciness and great malt base on which to build.
esty & me
Well, we thought it was so good that we decided to brew it again.
The Next Chapter Rye IPA is a solid IPA in every sense. Big, bold, hoppy, bitter in all the right ways, with that rye malt complemented by liberal doses of Columbus, Simcoe, and Mosaic hops.

What you get is a blast of piney citrusy goodness in the nose, followed by an awesome malty hit with just the right amount of bitterness to make it a memorable IPA, and finishing off with that unmistakable fruity hop finish that only Columbus and Mosaic hops can provide.
The end result is an IPA that will leave you wanting for another.

Available for a very limited run at all the usual outlets:
Bishop's Cellar, Rockhead Beer & Wine Market, Harvest Wines & Cristall Wine Merchants.

Plus our stalls at the Halifax Seaport Market and Alderney Farmers' Markets on Saturdays from 8:00am until 3:00pm.

Of course, you can also get it in 650 ml bottles and growlers at our Brewery Retail Store in beautiful Shelburne.

Rumble in the Alley Round 2!

Published by henry on Wed, 01/20/2016 - 10:10

Rumble In The Alley Round 2 is the second collaboration between the Boxing Rock Brewing Company and our friends at Upstreet Craft Brewing in Charlottetown, PEI.

Some of you may remember Rumble in the Alley Round 1, a SMaSH IPL made with 100% Maritime 2-Row malt and 100% Amarillo hops.

This second round of Single Malt and Single Hop beers features a SMaSH IPA made with 100% Dark German Munich malt and 100% Ontario grown Santiam hops from our friends at Clear Valley Hops in Ontario.

This awesome collaboration features great malty flavours of biscuit, honey and toasted grain with a unique hop structure featuring a fragrant floral nose followed by a lemon-lime flavour touch, finishing with that unmistakable Santiam character: spicy and citrus notes and floral aroma resulting from copious dry-hopping.

Available for a limited time only at select bars in Halifax and Antigonish, as well as in 650 ml bottles at Bishop's Cellar, Rockhead Wine & Beer Market, Harvest Wines, and Cristall Wine Merchants.

It will be available in 1L growlers at our stalls at the Halifax Seaport Market and the Alderney Farmers' Market on Saturdays from 7:00 am until 3:00 pm.

Of course you can also get it at the Brewery retail store in Shelburne.

Oban Heather

We've gone Scottish!

Something must have gotten over us, and we couldn't resist.
We invited our good friend Jason "Professor" McDougall to come and brew something special.

It's the perfect accompaniment to your Robbie Burns dinner. But it's so sessionable you'll want to drink it any time.

You will prepare a short 5 minute or less presentation and present your entry in person to the judging panel. Photos of your brewing setup are encouraged, and should be submitted along with your presentation.

Judging:

You must submit the equivalent of six 341 ml, or 12 oz bottles for judging. The style you've chosen to brew has to be clearly marked on the entry form, and copies must be wrapped around each bottle submitted and secured with an elastic band. Style guidelines may be downloaded here: http://www.bjcp.org/docs/2015_Guidelines_Beer.pdf
Judging will be a panel of both BJCP certified judges, media and industry professionals, including ourselves! Judging will include BJCP principles, but your presentation and story also counts towards your final score, so make it good. The entry with the highest score will win.

The winner:

We'll choose the winning entry and name the winning brewer the Black Box Brewer of the Year, and award you a cool trophy. We will contact the winning brewer and invite you down to Shelburne where we'll help you make your brew on our 17 HL system.
