At Boxing Rock we believe in pairing beer - with food, with music, with art, and with fun things to do. One of my favourite beer pairings is axe throwing.
We’ve had axe throwing at the taproom since we opened in 2019 and before that we used to throw axes up on the hill at the brewery. Before that…I had an axe target in the muddy parking lot out back of the brewery. I first discovered axe throwing in 2014 and by 2015 Darren Hudson of Wild Axe Productions was trading me axe targets for beer. Early in the morning while the mash was on or late in the afternoon while the kettle was washing I used to pull out my axe and throw. It was how I took a little pause in my day, a joyful break with coffee in the morning or a cold Hunky Dory in the afternoon. Visiting brewers and dignitaries would get an axe throwing lesson. It was a great way to break the ice and hang out. To this day it is what I do to entertain visitors - just this afternoon I was throwing axes at the taproom with the Executive Director of the BC Craft Brewers Guild.
In 2015 we made our first batch of Wild Axe Bohemian Pilsener. It was a recipe I’d made at home and it seemed like a great fit to name it after Darren and his endeavours. We proudly serve Wild Axe at the Timber Lounge and we were delighted to sponsor the World Double Bit Axe Throwing Championships in 2022.
